Ask The Accordion!

When you think of an accordion you think of a musical instrument but in this case I am not referring to that accordion that we all know but rather the very slick invention of the accordion and how it receives air to pump in and out!

Did you know that whales have this feature?

What is the most amazing is that baleen whales desperately need this accordion feature! But why? And do all whales have this feature? The answer is no!

A Closer Look At Whales:

The Orca (Orcinusorca latin in it’s root name) (Killer whale) is classified as Odontoceti or (toothed whales) these “toothed whales” do not have the accordion extensions on their “chins” or “necks” as seen here, so you could teasingly say “no double chin” right?

Since the Odontoceti whales do not need this feature did they decide to do a ton of “head exercises to get rid of those ugly flaps of accordion like flaps?

First of all it seems silly that animals can change features like that just by setting their minds to it. And also the very idea that they could even decide one day that they don’t need the accordion flaps does not mean they can alter that feature.

That is like saying I was so tired of my blue eyes that I decided to go to brown just by thinking about it. However evolution would have you to believe that is how evolution happens. An animal sees it’s need to “evolve” a specific trait or lack of trait and it just changes! But this is not observed!

Why The Accordion Throat?

But why do the Baleen whales (No teeth) that they call Mysticeti  have these features? (Specifically the Sperm Whale or the Big Blue whale?

The Orca is a chomping killer. However the Baleen whale is classified as a differentiation due to the way in which it eats.

Like great bristles of a giant hairbrush, the Baleen whales are equipped with these bristly strainers to catch their very favorite food! Krill. These giant whales can weigh up to 190 t (210 short tons)! And eat as much as An adult blue whale can eat up to 40 million krill in a day. “The whales always feed in the areas with the highest concentration of krill, sometimes eating up to 3,600 kilograms (7,900 lb) of krill in a single day. The daily energy requirement of an adult blue whale is in the region of 1.5 million kilocalories (6.3 GJ).”  (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_whale)

Can you imagine trying to find that many krill? Krill are only about the size of a larger paper clip about 2.5 inches in length! And yet they need millions of these little orange guys to survive!

Baleen consists of keratin, the same fibrous structural proteins that we find in human fingernails and hair. Baleen is a skin derivative. And some whales have longer baleen than other whales (Like the Bowhead whale)  It has also been observed that the gray whale, may only use one side of their baleen when eating their meal.

Another amazing thing about Baleen whales (esp. Big Blue) is that scientist have also noticed that they have a very special sensory organ along their chins called tactile organs ‘vibrasse’ that help them to find their tiny prey!

The reason for the special folding of their throat is due to when they open their mouth to swallow these krill the flaps of skin open wide to allow for more space to swallow a larger amount of krill at one time!

These whales also have split jaws to aid them when opening their mouths so they can eat even more!

And look at these amazing features! The Baleen to strain out the krill, a sense organ to locate the krill, and flaps on the throat that fold just so and unfold when they need to get more krill!

Evolution is wrong!

It will tell you that a whale’s closest relatives are cows, deer, pigs, camels, giraffes, sheep, and hippos! Now how does that just up and happen?

Well it doesn’t. NEVER EVER have we observed this transformation of evolution happen.

The question is: If the traits of these whales evolved they would STARVE TO DEATH in the process! They cannot do without their Baleen their sense organ, or their flaps of skin. They would starve. And yet the killer whale doesn’t have that baleen, or flaps of skin to catch krill because it doesn’t need it.

This is design. Not random chance. Someone is feeding us a tall tale! A whale of a tail! Right!?
